Chandigarh, July 31
Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan paid tribute to Shaheed Udham Singh on his 85th Martyrdom Day at Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Wednesday.
Highlighting Shaheed Udham Singh’s contribution, the Speaker said that he avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, the then Governor of Punjab, in London. Udham Singh had vowed to take revenge for the brutal massacre that occurred on April 13, 1919, which had sparked widespread anger against the British.
The Speaker noted that Udham Singh’s stay in London was purposeful, aiming to find an opportunity to kill Michael O’Dwyer, whom he held responsible for the Amritsar massacre. On March 13, 1940, during a meeting of the East India Association, Udham Singh finally avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by shooting Michael O’Dwyer.
The Speaker reminded that Udham Singh was hanged on July 31, 1940, in Pentonville Jail. He emphasized that even after almost eight and a half decades, Shaheed Udham Singh’s legacy lives on in the hearts of millions, inspiring generations with his courage, bravery and dedication.
