Patiala, January 8:
Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh has assured residents that there is no need to panic about the newly identified Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). While no cases have been reported in Punjab, the state government has made robust arrangements for testing and treating potential cases.
During a visit to Rajindra Hospital today, Dr. Balbir Singh reviewed the preparedness for HMPV treatment. He informed that 20 beds in the Life Support Emergency Swine Flu Ward, 30 beds in Ward No. 5, and 20 ventilators are ready to cater to any emergencies.
The Health Minister emphasized that HMPV is not as severe as the COVID-19 virus. Instead, it is a flu-like virus similar to the common cold, often causing mild fever and cough that usually resolves within a week. However, he added that the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has taken proactive steps to ensure preparedness.
Dr. Balbir Singh stated that although no cases have been reported in Punjab, the state has collaborated with the National Institute of Virology, the Union Health Ministry, and the World Health Organization to stay updated on developments. Following directives from these bodies, a video conference was held with civil surgeons across the state to disseminate necessary guidelines.
He further reassured that Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is personally monitoring the situation and remains in constant contact with health officials daily.
The Health Minister urged the public to avoid falling prey to superstitions or rumors and instead focus on taking precautions. He advised vulnerable groups, including children under one year of age, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, to avoid crowded places. Additionally, he stressed the importance of maintaining hygiene by covering the nose and mouth during colds and washing hands regularly before touching the face.
Dr. Balbir Singh also held a meeting with senior health officials, including Dr. Rajan Singla, Director Principal of Government Medical College, Dr. Girish Sahni, Medical Superintendent of Rajindra Hospital, and Dr. R.P.S. Sibia, to review the arrangements in place.
