Harpal Singh Cheema directs Education Department to promptly resolve ground-level issues faced by mid-day meal workers
CHANDIGARH, 21st September 2026:
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Cabinet Sub-Committee constituted to resolve employee issues, on Monday convened extensive meetings with various employee unions operating under the Mid-Day Meal scheme and the Maanbhatta Workers Sanjha Morcha.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema held detailed discussions with the workers’ unions regarding their demands and issues. He stated, “I have directed the concerned departments to resolve departmental-level issues on priority. All genuine proposals related to employment matters should be forwarded to the Personnel Department, while matters involving financial implications should be sent to the Finance Department.”
During the meetings, the Finance Minister assured the union leadership, “The Bhagwant Singh Mann Government is deeply committed to addressing the legitimate demands of the workers, and the necessary procedural work to achieve this is already underway.”
To ensure immediate relief for the workforce, Harpal Singh Cheema also issued strict directions to the Education Department, stating, “District-level officials must proactively monitor and promptly resolve any practical difficulties faced by mid-day meal workers at the ground level.”
A diverse group of representatives presented their demands and grievances to the committee throughout the proceedings. The delegations included Karam Chand Chindalia, Kamaljit Kaur, Paramjit Kaur, and Mumtaz Ghungrana representing the Mid-Day Meal Cook Union (BMS), as well as Jasmel Kaur Birkalan, Kulwinder Kaur Adampur, Devraj Verma, Makhan Singh Jakhepal, and Harpal Kaur from the Lal Jhanda Mid-Day Meal Workers Union. The Democratic Mid-Day Meal Cook Front was represented by Harjinder Kaur Lope, Jangbahadur Kaur, and Simarjit Kaur. Furthermore, Bimla Devi, Parveen Bala, Kamlesh Kaur, and Kamaljit Kaur attended on behalf of the Mid-Day Meal Workers Union. Also presenting their issues were Deepak Nagpal, Parveen Sharma, Vijay Kumar, and Davinder Singh Teja from the Mid-Day Meal Daftari Karamchari Union, alongside Paramjit Kaur, Lakhwinder Kaur, Mamta Sharma, Sarabjit Kaur, Shakuntala, and Ramanjit representing the Maanbhatta Workers Sanjha Morcha.
