To make Patiala walkable and a cycle-friendly city, District Administration has approved a dedicated cycling corridor of a 1.2 km-long bicycle track from Theekriwala Chownk to Yadvindra Public School. District Administration has engaged Bunge Enterprises to set up the dedicated cycle track on the road. Sakshi Sawhney, the Deputy Commissioner said there is a need to encourage the use of bicycles as an environment-friendly mode of transportation.
It is being launched as a pilot project to make the city walkable and environment-friendly; helping people save money by encouraging them to walk down or cycle to their places of work, shopping and studies; reducing pollution. The laying of the cones and chains on the cycle track would be carried out in the coming week. Deputy Commissioner also wanted the law enforcement agencies to ensure that no vehicles are parked on the track. “Cyclists should start using the lane regularly,” she added.
Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner held a meeting to complete the project of this first cycling track by next week, with Bunge India Plant Commercial Head Ajay Singla, H.R. Manager Sandeep Sharma and Environment Manager Sachin Vohra along with Assistant Commissioner (UT) Dr Akshita Gupta, DSP Traffic Karamveer Toor, Road Safety Engineer Shavinderjit Brar. Executive Engineer of Public Works Piyush Agarwal and SDO of Punjab Pollution Control Board Garima Garg was also present.
