Ferozepur, August 29, 2020: When the nation is paying floral tribute on the 115th birth anniversary of Wizard of Indian Hockey – to Major Dhyan Chand, the Ferozepur border town family of Gold Medalist Hockey Player – Rajinder Singh, who died in 2010, are waiting for honour from the government.
Telling the tale, Sharmila – the sister of late Rajinder Singh, every year look forward for the honour. Yes, Rajinder Singh was the first Hockey Olympian from Ferozepur and Gold Medalist, has not got even a single award. Sharmila has opened the front for posthumous honour for his brother. He also represented Northern Railway Hockey team from 1957 to 1972 but no cash award, house, plot or life time award, state pension, has been given by the country and state as well.
She informed that Rajinder Singh has played a vital role in getting the gold medal for India while representing the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. His photograph has also been displayed at the Chandigarh Museum. He did not marry and dedicated his life to the sports activities in the name of the nation.
Adding further, she said, in 2014, when the golden jubilee was celebrated for Olympic Gold Medal, the team players but my brother did not figure in that list when the family members were of players who are not in this world now were also included. Later on, I flashed a chain of letters to the government. But she will continue her fight.
I was saddened when my brother died in 2010, no official honour was extended, she rued.
Now Sharmila pleads for the job to her son for which she has written a letter to the Sports Minister who has recommended his request to the government and hopeful to get a positive response.
