Two Gurdaspur based students and a girl from Delhi died while another Gurdaspur based youngster survived after the car in which the four friends were travelling fell into Sidhwan Canal near PAU Gate Number 8 on South City Road on Sunday evening.
The victims were identified as Prabhjot Singh Lubana (19), Pahul Bains (18) (Both from Gurdaspur) and Tiksha Saini (21) of Delhi. In the incident the lone survivor was 20-year-old Rahul of Gurdaspur.
Tiksha Saini was pursuing medical internship in the city and three boys came to the city to meet her. The Maruti Suzuki Swift car was being driven by Prabhjot.
Rahul informed the police that they had reached Ludhiana at around 2.30pm and picked up Tiksha and went shopping. “We were heading towards South City to drop Tiksha at her paying guest at around 5.30pm. When we passed through the underpass near Verka Milk Plant, a Hyundai i20 car took a sharp turn and Prabhjot lost control. Our car hit Hyundai i20 before falling into the canal,” he said.
He added that he managed to jump out of the car and got saved. “I immediately raised the alarm and some passerby jumped in the canal to save my friends. After rescuing the three friends they were rushed to the hospital where the doctors declared them dead,” Rahul said.
ACP Gurpreet Singh said that the police have recorded the statement of Rahul and are now scanning the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area to trace Hyundai i20 vehicle.
